The Key Feature: Toughened Glass These aren't made from ordinary glass. They are manufactured from soda-lime or borosilicate glass that undergoes a thermal "toughening" process. 


• 1. The Process: The glass is heated to a high temperature and then rapidly cooled with air.  

• 2. The Result: The outer surface cools and solidifies first, while the interior remains molten longer. As the interior cools and contracts, it pulls on the already-solid outer shell, putting it under high compressive stress.  

• 3. The Benefit: This makes the glass incredibly strong. A mechanical blow that would shatter ordinary glass must first overcome this built-in compressive stress before it can break the insulator.


Common Types of High-Voltage Glass Insulators
Suspension Insulator (or Disc Insulator):


Purpose: Used to suspend the conductor from transmission towers. They are the most common type on high-voltage lines.

Design: Multiple glass discs are connected in a "string." The voltage rating and mechanical strength of the string are determined by the number of discs.

Advantage: If one disc shatters, the remaining discs in the string can still support the line, and the broken unit is easily visible for replacement.
