The effectiveness of RTV coatings stems from their hydrophobicity and hydrophobic migration.
Hydrophobicity: A clean RTV surface naturally repels water, causing moisture to bead up rather than spread out.
Hydrophobic Migration: When the coating surface becomes contaminated, low molecular weight (LMW) silicone chains within the coating migrate through the pollution layer. This gives the dirt itself water-repellent properties, preventing it from becoming a conductive film even in fog or light rain.
RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing) silicone rubber coatings are applied to toughened glass insulators to solve pollution problems. These coatings transform the insulator's surface from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, preventing conductive water films and significantly reducing the risk of flashovers in harsh environments.
